KyaPanel makes Zimbra just a great webmail
quarta, 29 outubro 2008

What's going on?

KyaPanel is a four years old software. Mature and reliable servers manager and one of it’s modules is oriented towards managing mail servers.

Some of it’s features are exclusive in this kind of software, at least in the FLOSS ones, i.e. the per user and per domain attachment control. Of course, there are much more. So, if you don’t know KyaPanel well enough, take a look at it’s description.

Zimbra is great! Simply the most beautiful and well done FLOSS Webmail available. But Zimbra is much more than just a “pretty face”, it’s a fully featured mail server with it’s own management interface.

That’s the point: KyaPanel is a better mail server’s manager. It has much more options, giving more flexibility to control users and domains.

“We just get them both to work together, so now, everybody can have the best of these two worlds.” says Anahuac de Paula Gil, the main KyaPanel developer.

Using Zimbra just as a webmail

We know that probably Zimbra‘s development team will not like this very much, but once KyaPanel get installed and integrated, Zimbra‘s management interface is no longer needed. In fact, using it after that, can be very harmful to all mail server’s environment.

In this case Zimbra will not know that KyaPanel is there doing the hard work for it. But this is something easy to do because Zimbra’s command line interface.

Using Kya-Filter as a content filter to control messages per domain and per user, you get a secure, functional, flexible and user friendly Mail Server.

Can I control users setting different message size for each user? Yes, this is exactly what KyaPanel does for you. But it’s not only with message size. You can control users by attachment file type, by sender, by recipient, number of recipients and much more. The kind of control that Zimbra don’t offer.

KyaPanel Development Team is working on a Zimbra backup/restore system. It will be published under GPL very soon.

KyaPanel

KyaPanel is a panel to provide easy management in Gnu/Linux servers, developed to increase the network administration. Two modules are available in this version: E-mail Management and Samba Management.

E-mail Module can manage a server with Postfix + Courier and two options of database: OpenLDAP or SQL. If you choose SQL then KyaPanel offers two options: PostgreSQL or MySQL.

Samba Module offer a very friendly interface to manage sharings and users access permissions. More than that, you can see all logged users, see what they are accessing in the server and you have the option to block them out. The Samba Module uses OpenLDAP, smbpasswd or tdbsam as user database.

KyaPanel has been developed in three layers: Interface in PHP, core in Shell Script and Database on OpenLDAP or SQL.

It’s simple to install, have a lot of management options and very easy code. After all the main part is developed in Shell Script, so any one can modify it to attend it’s own needs.

How much is it?

The true is that KyaPanel and OpenSource Zimbra are totally free of charge. There is no control or limitation of any kind.

After all their are FLOSS, so more than get it free of charge, you can see, study, modify or redistribute it’s code.

Welcome to the IT liberty era.
